“I don’t know what you mean, Altamont, but I think I’ve only one more need for them,” he paused. “Tomorrow.” He smirked and walked off.
“What now, Liam?” I asked.
“For me, Liberty Hall. For you, Mrs McGuffey’s. I’ll meet you at breakfast.”
“But, Liam.”
“In the morning, Thomas.” He departed into the darkness.
Chapter 13
Easter Monday
24 April 1916
“Come, Watson. Breakfast is ready and I fear today you may not eat much else.” Holmes was shaking me from my heavy sleep. It had been near dawn when I had finally been able to close my eyes to the outside world and fallen into a dreamless rest.
The sun shone behind my curtains. It was half six by my watch as I gathered myself together. Holmes was almost finished eating when I finally got to the table and as I sat there was a knock on the door. It was Cacy. He and some others had been given a mission to arouse people and get them to their assembly points by noon.
“I’d offer you some coffee but I’m sure you’re in a hurry,” I told him
“We’ve always a moment for a cup of coffee, Doctor. It’s my only vice you know.”
Holmes and I looked at each other and smirked. I poured a cup and handed it to Cacy. “Have you a bit of something to warm it? No? Well, that’s fine, any coffee is good coffee.”
“Do you have a particular message for me?” I asked.
“Yes, sir, you’re to report to Connolly himself and to bring whatever medicines you have with you. He wants you too,” he continued, nodding at Liam.
“How is your work going?” Holmes asked, packing his pipe.
“Not finding too many, I’m not. Between the manoeuvre being called off and all, folks have gone on their holiday.” He put his empty cup back on the table. “Thank you, sirs, most welcome and refreshing. I’d best be off to see if I can find more folks for their parade at noon.” With that, he waved and left.
“Holmes, he still doesn’t know what’s going on!”
“No, Watson. I left the Hall just over an hour ago and they still hadn’t told the rank and file. Some of them have it figured out but for the most part, they are still ignorant of where their leadership is taking them today.”
“What were you doing all night?”
“Mostly watching.”
“Oh, who?”
“Burns and his men,” he fiddled with his pipe. “Can’t seem to get it packed right.”
“Really, Holmes, can’t you just answer a question?”
“Burns and his six minions were surveying their target and I was surveying them. They were also collecting equipment. Uniforms mostly, some weapons, rope, drills and other tools and taking them to their warehouse.”
“What uniforms?”
“Volunteer uniforms.”
“Do they intend to infiltrate the Volunteers?”
“Watson, Watson. You still do not see. Well, today all shall become clear. Come on,” he rose from the table. “Connolly wants you and you can tell him I reported to work at the Castle as usual but I’ll make some excuse of illness and come along presently.”
As we left the lodgings, Holmes stopped me for a moment at the door.
